ONCOPLASTIC BREAST SURGERY
Breast cancer is the commonest cancer affecting women. In India more than 80,000 new breast cancers are diagnosed every year. Although it affects women of all ages, more commonly seen in postmenopausal women above 55 years. It also occurs in men but is very rare, making up around 1% of all breast cancer cases.
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women. It is curable if detected in early stages.

Surgical operations are as follows:
1. Mastectomy
Complete removal of one or both the breasts depending on the disease and future risk of developing cancer in the non affected breast.
2. Breastconservation Surgery/ Breast Sparing Surgery/ Lumpectomy
Removing only the tumor and a small margin of normal breast tissue surrounding the tumor. This type of surgery is established as a safe option for most women with early breast cancer.
3. Oncoplastic
Oncoplastic procedures are often a part of breast conservation surgery. On most occasions breast reconstruction (partial/total) is done along with the cancer surgery and in certain situations it is delayed.

4. Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a technique which identifies the first affected lymph node by cancer in armpit. Such a lymph node is then subjected to frozen section biopsy (rapid biopsy method performedduring the surgery); if no cancer is detected, then no other lymph node will be removed, but if cancer is found in that lymph node, more nodes may have to be removed (called axillary dissection).
